In Baltimore City, where communities are rich in culture but often face significant challenges, fostering healthy relationships can be a transformative tool for social and personal growth. At B MORE PRP, we believe that emotional intelligence, effective communication, and conflict resolution are not just individual skills—they are the building blocks of a stronger, more connected community. As part of our psychiatric rehabilitation program in Baltimore, Maryland, we offer a range of services to help individuals improve their relationships and create a positive impact in their lives and communities.
Our Cultivating Connection: A Path to Healthy Relationships group series, designed for adults, is a prime example of how these skills can create lasting change in individuals and the communities they serve. Over three impactful sessions, participants engage in hands-on learning and practice aimed at improving their relationships and interactions, not just with family and friends but with colleagues, neighbors, and broader community members.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the core principles of the Cultivating Connection group and how the skills we teach are helping Baltimore residents cultivate healthier relationships that ultimately support community growth and cohesion.
- Session 1: Empathy and Emotional Intelligence—Understanding Each Other’s Hearts
One of the greatest challenges we face in a bustling, often divided city like Baltimore is truly understanding and connecting with one another. Differences in background, experiences, and perspectives can create barriers to empathy. But when we develop emotional intelligence (EI), we gain the ability to bridge those divides.
In Session 1, participants dive deep into the importance of empathy and emotional intelligence. These foundational skills are critical for understanding the emotional experiences of others, which helps reduce misunderstandings and promote compassion. Through active listening exercises and self-reflection, participants learn to identify their own emotional states and better tune in to the feelings of those around them. As part of our mission as a leading mental health agency in Maryland, we emphasize the importance of these skills in promoting emotional well-being and strengthening relationships.
By increasing emotional awareness, participants become better equipped to build relationships that are rooted in understanding, not judgment. Whether in personal conversations, workplace dynamics, or community engagement, empathy paves the way for connection and trust. - Session 2: Conflict Resolution—Turning Tension into Transformation
Conflicts are an inevitable part of life. In Baltimore, like any urban area, disagreements and tensions can arise in neighborhoods, workplaces, and even within families. However, how we handle conflict determines whether it leads to division or growth.
In Session 2, our group explores conflict resolution strategies that empower participants to approach disagreements with a collaborative mindset rather than a combative one. We introduce conflict styles—avoidance, accommodation, competition, compromise, and collaboration—and help participants identify their own tendencies. From there, we practice tools that reduce emotional escalation and promote constructive problem-solving.
Through role-playing exercises and guided discussions, participants learn how to use active listening and collaborative problem-solving to transform conflict into an opportunity for growth. This skill is particularly valuable in community settings, where diverse viewpoints often collide.
As the group works through real-life conflict scenarios, participants leave with a clearer understanding of how to approach challenges in ways that promote collective well-being, not just individual interests. - Session 3: Effective Communication—The Power of Clear, Compassionate Dialogue
Communication is the thread that ties everything together—whether you’re trying to explain a need to a partner, resolve a dispute with a coworker, or engage with a neighbor about a community issue. In Session 3, we focus on developing assertive communication skills and learning how to communicate in ways that foster understanding and collaboration.
Our participants explore the concept of assertive communication—expressing thoughts, feelings, and needs clearly, without being passive or aggressive. The session also covers non-verbal communication, teaching participants to be aware of body language, tone, and facial expressions—critical elements often overlooked in conversations.
A core tool we introduce in this session is the DEAR MAN method from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), which helps participants assert their needs in a direct and respectful way. DEAR MAN stands for:
- Describe: State the facts.
- Express: Share your feelings.
- Assert: Request what you need.
- Reinforce: Explain the positive outcomes.
- Mindful: Stay focused.
- Appear: confident.
- Negotiate: Be open to compromise.
This method is especially helpful when it comes to setting boundaries or asking for what we need without fear of rejection or conflict. Practicing these techniques empowers participants to communicate more effectively, both in their personal lives and within the broader community. When everyone communicates with clarity and respect, it opens the door to collaboration and mutual support.
